For 23 years our son Mitch etched memories into the hearts of everyone he met. He was as real as they come. What he meant to us and to so many others now belongs to the legacy we will cherish forever.

At Mitch’s going-home service Pastor James MacDonald used one word that best described Mitch: “Maximum.”

Mitch lived life to the max, regardless of the activity. Mitch was a born leader, never afraid of a challenge, and always ready to go first. There was no in-between with Mitch. As hard as you played, he would play harder. His passion and will to win always pushed him to finish first. Mitch was never short of enthusiasm, energy, and strength. Mitch could make an entrance. When he walked into the room his presence took over. Everyone knew when Mitch was “in the house.” For those he loved, instead of the appropriate handshake, Mitch would pick you up from behind by the legs and lift you high into the air ignoring your pleas to be put down.

Mitch was loyal to his family and friends but most of all, to his Savior. Mitch was courageous about sharing his faith in Jesus Christ with anyone he met. As time passed, Mitch depended on the mercy, forgiveness, and grace Jesus made available to him, and he challenged everyone to do the same. Underneath the rough and tough exterior beat the heart of compassion and love for others no one will ever forget. Mitch was a true encourager. He brought a smile to your face and was the first to shed a tear for a hurting friend.

Mitch knew the definition of serving. He built cabins for his church camp and was never too busy to spend a weekend helping friends with home projects. He traveled with mission teams to South America. On a trip to Lima, Peru, Mitch served at an orphanage. After spending time building new facilities, he played for hours with the kids swinging them around and giving horseback rides. These kids were all attracted to his genuine love and compassion.

On August 14, 2004 Mitch went home to be with his Lord. We were all devastated, but knew he was in God’s hands. Mitch accepted Christ as his personal Savior, a choice that ensured his place in heaven. At Mitch’s wake we had the opportunity to meet hundreds of people who experienced his energy and excitement. We heard countless stories and testimonies of the lives he touched and how clearly God was working in his life.

We thank God for Mitch and will forever treasure the 23 years we shared together.

The Mitchell Swaback Foundation will continue Mitch’s legacy. It is our hope to duplicate his energy, strength and endurance to reach out and serve others in his memory.
